In recent years there has been a powerful movement in the surfing community away from high-performance, “serious” surfing and towards a more fun, lighthearted encounter with the ocean.
With this in mind I recently purchased a Beater from Catch Surf. The Beater is a very short soft-top surfboard designed to be ridden in blackball areas of beaches where surfing is normally prohibited.
The board is goofy and feels strange under my feet. Surfing it is sort of like trying to speak after a Novocain injection at the dentist. Something normally effortless and elegant is suddenly made foreign and unfamiliar. I feel a little sloppy and out of control and most waves end with me laughing at my own clumsiness.
